Episode 66 - Rise Up with Rick featuring Joe Misiti, AFL Legend
“Smokin” Joe Misiti joins Rick to chat and share some stories and laughs about all things life, football, High Performance and the glory days of playing footy for Essendon at the absolute halcyon peak of one of the games oldest and most famous clubs. Joey was absolutely pivotal in the famous side that was the “Baby Bombers” who won the AFL Premiership in 1993, and he recounts brilliantly his ups and downs following the sudden rise to fame at 18 years of age.
Misiti was one of the most consistent midfielders in the land for well over a decade, an absolute ball magnet who could just win so much footy. With a razor-sharp football brain, he was strong, hard and tough over the footy and would always use it to perfection making players around him better. Joe was a regular in the top 5 finish in the Best and Fairest finishing second twice, one of these occasions was in a phenomenal season of 1999 where he would finish runners up to his great mate Mark Mercuri. Following 1999, “Smokin” Joe was a huge part of what was statistically and anecdotally the greatest single season of all time as his beloved Bombers took all before them, winning every single game by huge average margins,-barring a narrow loss to the Bulldogs in would become known as the introduction of the “flooding” tactics.
The Bombers would beat Melbourne in the 2000 Grand Final by 60 points. Joe who had a sensational home and away season went full next level in the finals series with some out of these world performances that what net him the coveted “Player of the Finals Series at seasons end. After Misiti won his second flag, he continued in his ultra consistent, laid back and quiet manner until season 2004 when he retired and moved into other ventures post footy.
Joey is one of life’s great men- so authentic- with a sharp wit, he loves a good time with his friends and family and is always looking to improve! He is everything we love!!
